      Gr 9 Up-Fascinating true stories about extreme careers, women in the military, and engineering marvels are told in this series. The titles provide a broad overview of their high-octane subjects, and each of the 10 short chapters describes real-life examples. However, the amount of content means that the information tends to be more generalized and not as comprehensive. The text is highly readable. Each page provides around two short paragraphs with simple sentences, which use a controlled vocabulary at a third-grade reading level. The eye-catching page layouts are appealing. Full-page photographs, charts, and infographics help the subject matter come alive. VERDICT Captivating topics and engaging page layouts make this a solid choice for striving high school readers.
