Wilde era stato processato ed incarcerato per omosessualità e scrisse il De Profundis dalla sua cella. È una lettera intensamente personale che indaga le fasi del dolore e intreccia il tema religioso con quello dell'arte. Fu pubblicata nel 1905, cinque anni dopo la morte di Wilde, con il titolo latino De Profundis che si traduce in "dal profondo".
