Jackie Stinson's best friend is dead, and everyone knows who killed her. Jackie wants to be many things, but a martyr has never been one of them. She is an ex-emotional eater and mother of four, who has finally lost the weight she long yearned to be free of. In her new, sharp-edged body, she goes by Jacqueline. But leaving her old self behind proves harder than she ever imagined. And while she believes she should be happier, misery still chases her, and motherhood threatens to subsume what little is left of her. Her only salve is her best friend Theresa, whose seemingly perfect life she desperately covets. Since they met in the maternity ward fifteen years earlier, the two have survived the trials of motherhood side by side—Theresa with her quiet, cherubic daughter, and Jacqueline with her rambunctious, unruly boys. Their bond is tight, but it is not enough to keep Jacqueline, finally moving through the world in the body she has always wanted, from stealing a bit of Theresa's perfect life. Hot Springs Drive is a dark, heart-pounding exploration of one woman's deepest desires and how the consequences of betrayal can ripple outward beyond the initial strike point. In her third and fiercest novel, acclaimed literary voice Lindsay Hunter deftly peels back the fragile veneer of two suburban families and the secrets roiling between them.

When a nice Midwestern mom loses pound after pound, devours carrot sticks, shuns Fritos, and quits baking cookies for her four sons, it could be a sign of impending disaster. Narrator Emily Ellet introduces listeners to Jackie, who revels in her new thin, seductive body. Ellet's Jackie has an earthy, insouciant personality. The story is about two next-door families who are caught up in murder, guilt, and grief. Each affected family member is featured and their reactions presented. There are numerous characters, but some voices do stand out, namely those of the nearly childlike Ceci, the victim's daughter; the sweet yet soporific prison psychologist; and Sammy, the barely functional youngest of Jackie's sons. Numerous sex scenes are more monotonous than erotic. D.L.G. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine

Hunter (Eat Only When You're Hungry) offers a narrative of a life gone wrong, taking listeners through the twists and turns, destructive relationships, and critical choices that culminate in a woman's death. Jackie is a frustrated stay-at-home mother of four rambunctious boys who befriends her neighbor Theresa. She considers Theresa the perfect mother and wife and proceeds to emulate her in every way. After embarking on a dramatic weight-loss program, Jackie begins to see her marriage and children in a new light, realizing the power that her new, sharper self wields. What follows is the slow undoing of everyone in Jackie's circle, where everyone seems obsessed with sex: wanting or not wanting it; having or not having it; or using sex as a reason for every decision. In the end, Jackie's desire to manipulate those around her leads to a murder and the devastation of all involved. Emily Ellet narrates all voices with perfect distinction, even the voices of the younger characters. Although the ending may not sit well with all listeners, Hunter's character portrayals fascinate. VERDICT Thorny, character-driven social drama for fans of Jane Shemilt's Little Friends.--Laura Brosie
