A long-lost Modigliani portrait, a grieving brother's blood vendetta, a Soviet secret that's been buried for eighty years—Parisian private investigator Aimée Leduc's current case is her most exciting one yet.

When Aimée's long-term partner and best friend Rene leaves their detective agency for a new job in Silicon Valley, Aimée knows she can handle the extra workload. At least, that what she tells herself ... repeatedly.

But all bets are off when Yuri Volodya, a mysterious old Russian man, hires Aimée to protect a painting. By the time she gets to his Montparnasse atelier, the precious painting has already been stolen, leaving Aimée smelling a rat. The next day, Yuri is found tortured to death in his kitchen. To top it all off, it looks like Aimée isn't the only one looking for the painting. Some very dangerous people are threatening her and her coworkers, and witnesses are dropping like flies. Now Aimée has to find the painting, stop her attackers, and figure out what her long-missing mother, who is on Interpol's most wanted list, has to do with all this—fingers crossed she wasn't Yuri's murderer, despite clues pointing in that direction.

Obviously, Rene doesn't need to worry. Aimée has things under control.

A tantalizing clue to the whereabouts of Paris PI Aimée Leduc’s mysterious mother puts a personal spin on Black’s intricate 13th mystery set in contemporary Paris (after 2012’s Murder at the Lantern Rouge). Yuri Volodya, an elderly Russian who wants to hire Aimée to protect a valuable painting, possibly a Modigliani, tells Aimée he knew her mother, Sydney, whom she hasn’t seen since Sydney abandoned her at age eight. When the painting is stolen and Yuri is later tortured and killed, the police investigate. Meanwhile, a bizarre accident sidelines Aimée’s part-time hacker helper, “cash-poor aristocrat” Saj de Rosnay. Leduc must also cope amid threats of violence without trusted computer expert René Friant, lured to America by a Silicon Valley firm in a lengthy, well-developed subplot. Allusions to Modigliani, Picasso, Cocteau, Man Ray, and Duchamp help evoke 1920s Paris, though the complicated relationships among the principals will be more meaningful to series fans than to newcomers. Agent: Linda Allen, Linda Allen Literary Agency.

Madeleine Lambert brings a clear voice and authentic French accent to investigator AimÄe Leduc and her compatriots. Her business partner recently took a lucrative job offer in Silicon Valley. Now, AimÄe's detective agency has more work than she can do, and she's hoping that her friend, part-time computer hacker Saj de Rosnay, will be able to help her out. The plot, which is perfectly suited to the audio format, involves the black market art world, a long-lost portrait of Lenin by Modigliani, and AimÄe's long-missing mother. Lambert moves the narration along at a snappy pace. She convincingly ramps up the drama of the heroine's escapades as she chases dangerous shadows down the cobblestoned alleyways of Paris on her trusty Vespa. S.C.A.
