The Devil Wears Prada meets The Assistants in this "compulsively readable, frightening, but addictive" (Shelf Awareness) debut following a young woman who takes a job working for an enigmatic influencer and quickly discovers there's an ugly side to being a #GirlBoss.
After a series of go-nowhere jobs in the New York publishing world, Harper Cruz is desperate for a salary that won't leave her scrambling to make rent each month. So when she stumbles across a job posting from an influencer offering triple her last paycheck, she automatically submits her résumé.

Harper may not be familiar with self-help guru Charlotte Green, but her relentless optimism and charismatic can-do spirit has created a cult-like following of women across the country. When she selects Harper among thousands of other applicants in less than twenty-four hours, it's obvious she sees something she likes. Harper decides to take a leap of faith and become the newest member of The Greenhouse.

Accepting the job means a move to Nashville, and Harper is quickly dazzled by the glamourous world Charlotte has built in Music City. The Greenhouse is more than a workplace—it's a family—and Harper soon finds herself swept into its inner circle. At first, she loves working in such an inspirational environment, where mandatory dance parties, daily intentions, and group bonding activities make up for long hours and Charlotte's persistent demands for loyalty. But the deeper Harper is pulled into Charlotte's world, the more she realizes that having it all comes with a price in this "magnetic story" (Publishers Weekly).

Crooks debuts with a magnetic story about a broke New Yorker looking to make her mark within the publishing world. Harper Cruz lives with her privileged friend, Poppy, in an apartment Poppy inherited on the Upper East Side. She can’t afford the rent Poppy charges, however, and is desperate to avoid moving back home to the Hudson Valley. At Poppy’s encouragement, Harper applies for a job with influencer Charlotte Green in Nashville, Tenn., and is hired as Charlotte’s Visionary Support Strategist. In Tennessee, her role turns out to be just as vague as the title suggests, though less glamorous. She’s tasked with running mindless errands—buying yoga mats, crystals, and candles—and with baking holiday cookies and babysitting Charlotte’s five children. The story takes a turn when Tiffany, one of Charlotte’s “OG Three,” quits and threatens to dish on social media about Charlotte’s toxic workplace environment. The plot has plenty of momentum, and Crooks lays bare Harper’s desperation to succeed. Readers will gobble up this intelligent update on The Devil Wears Prada for the digital age. Agent: Mollie Glick, CAA.

Crooks's debut follows Harper Cruz, a twentysomething writer trying to make her way in New York. After losing her publishing job, she lands what appears to be a dream position, working with influencer Charlotte Green. The only catch is that she has to relocate to Nashville, where Charlotte's company focuses on empowering women to make the most of their lives (by buying her books and attending her fancy seminars). Charlotte is a horrible boss, exploiting her employees and taking credit for their work, but Harper finds herself rather well suited to the job. Putting her personal life on hold, Harper rockets from lowly personal assistant to employee of the year in just four months. Unfortunately, she does her job a little too well, and Charlotte soon puts her in her sights. While the story is occasionally amusing, listeners will likely tire of the shallow characters and trite dialogue. Narrator Midori Francis's presentation is adequate, although her portrayal of Harper makes her annoyingly immature, and her accents for the Nashville-based characters are uneven. VERDICT A quick listen with a satisfying ending. The audio doesn't stun, but fans of The Devil Wears Prada might enjoy.--Joanna M. Burkhardt
